If there is one thing I have learned over the last 25+ years of running is that it is never easy. Sure there may be some days that feel a little better than others, but let's be honest, running is hard. And while running on a treadmill is awesome, it still doesn't solve the problem that running is difficult. But...watching a great show or movie can take the sting out of running (slightly). Here are my top 5 favorite movies to watch while running on the treadmill:
#5 - Office Space
This movie is hilarious. As a former office / cubicle worker, I can't tell you how spot on this movie is. Time passes by very quickly on the treadmill when you are laughing hysterically.
#4 - Miracle
I will start this with I am not a fan of hockey. I have never really even seen a game of hockey. But this movie got me. The fact that it is a true story makes it even more fascinating. There is nothing I didn't love about this movie and when you are running during the last 30 minutes of the movie, you may forget you are running.
#3 - Vanilla Sky
As a Tom Cruise anti-fan, I hated adding this movie to the list but the fact is, this movie is really good. I found myself saying WTF multiple times during the movie. Trying to figure out what was real and what wasn't kept my mind off the fact I was running a long run. ere to edit.
#2 - We Are Marshall
Yes, this movie is sad but it is also inspiring and shows us how deep we can dig when we are united in cause. I was originally drawn to this movie because I went to college in Kentucky and we often ran track races at Marshall. I didn't know the story behind the movie before I watched it and to say that I was moved, inspired, sad, and overwhelmed is an understatement.
#1 - Prefontaine
I'm not sure I know a runner who is not inspired by Steve Prefontaine. When I was younger I went to Oregon specifically to visit Pre's rock and once there, I could not contain my emotions. It was one of the rare times I was so overcome with emotion that I couldn't contain my tears. I believe every runner should visit Pre's rock just to pay tribute to our own version of a legend. This movie rocks and I can't tell you how many times I have watched the Munich race wishing for a different ending.
I love treadmills. I love running on treadmills, writing about treadmills, and my favorite thing to do when I go to a hotel is to look at their treadmills.
